Throughout the years there has been some incredible father and son duos in the world of sport, these men have gone on to imprint their surnames on the history of the sport that they played and some have even become synonymous with the sports themselves. Let’s take a look at just a few of the biggest father/son combos that have graced the sporting universe.
Jack Elway and John Elway
Jack Elway was a prolific college football coach who lead a long career that culminated in him being the chief scout for the Denver Broncos as they won back-to-back Super Bowls. His son John took inspiration from his father and became one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history. As part of the Broncos team that won the Super Bowl in ’97 and ’98, John Elway was not only voted MVP in the ’97 Super Bowl but in 2004 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the first year that he was eligible to be inducted.
Dell and Steph Curry
Steph Curry has lit up the world of basketball in the last 2 years, his face has launched millions of magazines and his name has filled thousands of column inches thanks to his incredible form and his scarily accurate three-point shooting ability. Curry set the record for most 3-pointers made in a season whilst playing for Golden State Warriors during the 2012/13 season. shooting obviously runs in the family, father Dell Curry spent 16 years in the NBA and held a 46 percent floor shooting percentage as well as 40% from outside the 3-point line. Dell Curry still ranks as Charlotte’s leading all time scorer.
Mannings
Few families have lit up the world of sport like the Mannings have, if any, they are like the royal family of football whose successes seem to know no bounds. It all started with father Archie and his blistering form for Ole Miss Rebels in the late 60s, Manning Snr would attract huge crowds who would come to watch his powerful and charismatic style of quarterback play. Then sons Eli and Peyton came along and changed the game forever. Peyton is widely considered the greatest quarterback to have ever lived, he has notched up records, MVP trophies, Super Bowl rings and plaudits from all within the football world. Younger brother Eli more than holds his own in the ‘legend’ department having won two Super Bowls and set records with both the New York Giants franchise and within the NFL.
Bobby and Brett Hull
The NHL’s greatest father and son combo are Bobby and Brett Hull, son Brett has almost imitated the illustrious career that his father had and they have both won MVP and sportsmanship trophies as well as both being inducted in to the Hall of Fame. These two are the only father/son duo in all of professional sport to both have had their numbers retired and have notched up over 1300 goals between them.
