Over the last hundred or so years, humans have plundered planet Earth for our own designs, we have sucked up natural resources, we have polluted the skies and we have destroyed landscapes to enable us to, somewhat ironically, live better lives. For many years we knew not what we had done and blindly continued to spoil this beautiful planet that we live on.
Thankfully, the last 30 years have seen huge advancements in the world of science that has shone a light on the damage that we have done. For years these findings were ignored but the last decade has seen a shift in opinions and attitudes and now the World is waking up and trying to fix the damage. You can help too in project Mother Earth and you don’t have to make large changes in your life to do so, here are just a few ways in which you can help.
Eat Local and Organic
Eating organic foods means we reduce the amount of chemicals that are used to speed up the growth of natural foods. These chemicals damage the earth and animals andy eating organic foods we can avoid this damage. Supermarkets are now stocking a huge range of organic foods and people like Joshua Manocherian are even setting up farm-to-plate style organic restaurant to improve the cause.
Eating local will help us to reduce food miles, it is estimated that food travels, on average, around 1,500 miles to arrive at our plate, that is a lot of airplane fuel being used and an awful lot of damaging carbon emissions being pumped into the atmosphere.
Save Electric
In and around the home you should try your best to be aware of your electricity usage, simple things like turning off lights, gadgets and chargers when you are not using them can go a long way in reducing electricity consumption. This will not only reduce your energy bills but reduce our need to burn fossil fuels in order to create electricity in the first place.
Car Pooling and Public Transport
Cars, and the number of them, are one of the biggest factors in the pollution of the O-zone layer, they pump out dangerous levels of carbon dioxide which damages the environment. We have seen some encouraging changes in the car industry with electric cars but there are still too many gas guzzling motors on the road. You can do your bit by reducing how much driving you do, consider using a bicycle for short journeys or using public transport and car pooling options so that more people can travel whilst releasing less emissions.
Sponsor Tree Planting
With so much deforestation we are essentially strangling the Earth and removing its ability to heal itself. Trees ingest carbon dioxide and release healthy oxygen and you can help by sponsoring charities who make it their mission to plant trees on mass in their efforts to replace those that have been lost. For a small donation each month you can be doing your bit to help save the planet.
